How to Prepare a Electrical Panel Upgrade Project for Bids

A panel replacement is not necessarily the same as a service upgrade. Pricing changes considerably when the utility, meter, feeder conductors, grounding, permitted load or circuit work must change.

Scope to include in your bid request

  • Record existing panel amperage, manufacturer, location and any known defects or tripped circuits.
  • List intended additional loads such as EV charging, heat pumps, induction ranges or workshop equipment.
  • Ask bidders to identify utility coordination, outage duration, meter equipment and grounding upgrades.
  • Require a written description of permit, inspection, circuit labeling and any panel relocation work.

Photos, documents & drawings

Photos of the existing panel label and working clearance, the meter, and nearby walls are useful; do not remove electrical covers for a photo.

What to compare across contractor proposals

Panel-only replacement versus upgraded electrical service
Utility and meter work
Grounding and bonding
Permit and testing responsibilities
